The story
In 2017, Acupuncturist and Tai-chi teacher Parviz Sassanian, Erik Faber, Lecturer at Creative Technology at University of Twente, and Ben Bulsink, Entrepreneur and Electronic Product Developer came together to explore the possibilities for a consumer version breathing training tool.
Our main question: Can an affordable tool, together with good instructions or supported by a coach, help people to increase the quality of living, by getting insight in their activity patterns and breathing habits?
And then, is it possible, by training and getting feedback, to work (or relax) towards better balance in their life, driven by knowledge and experiences about their breathing?
For this, a measuring method and a sensor was required, but it appeared not to be easy to find suitable gear on the market. Therefore new electronics was built for this project, by Ben Bulsink.
On searching to answer the main question, whether a training of breathing habits can increase the quality of ones live, it appeared that in too many cases, training advise should be tailor-made: The breathing habits and the goals that people have, and instructions how to reach those goals via the feedback on breathing are so diverse, that some general guidelines would not deliver the quality that was desired.
From 2018 to 2020, a number of students at Universiteit of Twente and Saxion Hogeschool, both at Enschede, The Netherlands, contributed to the project, which was named Breathline in those days. Some reports can still be viewed online.
The development of the electronics was continued, and resulted in good and simple wearable equipment.
